Fresh Music Friday: Tomorrow I Sing It Live in DeLand — Distorti0n, Blues Song, and Music With No Screen Between Us

By Dr. Yaya Diamond

Fresh music is not always a song that came out this morning. Sometimes fresh music is a song you have carried for months, sung tomorrow in a new room, for people who have never heard it live. That is where I am today.

Tomorrow, Saturday, November 7, I perform at the 26th Annual DeLand Original Music Festival in downtown DeLand. Tonight is the quiet before it — the packing, the checking, the settling of the heart. Tomorrow, the music leaves the screen and stands in the room.

The Night Before the Music Starts

People see the performance. They do not always see the night before.

My live playback comes from my laptop and phone — tracks I sing to, with my own microphone and cables ready to go. That sounds simple, and it is, once everything is checked twice. A live singer learns to respect the small things: the right track, in the right order, charged, tested, and ready before the first person sits down.

That preparation is part of the music, too. Original music asks more of you than showing up and pressing play. These are my songs, my stories, my mother's legacy running underneath my own voice. When I step up tomorrow, I am not delivering a product. I am bringing a life's work into a room and trusting it to land.

Distorti0n: Rock ‘n’ Roll About Hearing Each Other Clearly

My most recent recording is "Distorti0n," released October 10, 2026, on Spotify and YouTube via Sony The Orchard. Let me keep saying it plainly, because it matters to me: this is a rock 'n' roll song.

"Distorti0n" is about the distortion of the internet, of text messages, and of misinterpretations — how a short message read in the wrong tone can turn a simple conversation into a whole misunderstanding. We have all lived that. We have all sent the message that landed wrong, and read the one that stung more than it should have.

Singing that song live changes it. In a recording, you hear the words. In a room, you watch faces when the words hit. You see people nod because they recognize their own phones, their own families, their own comment threads in the lyric. That recognition is why I wrote it. Music can name what is getting lost between us — and naming it is the first step back to listening clearly.

If you stream one song before tomorrow, stream that one all the way through. No scrolling. Just listen.

Blues Song: The Truth, Sung Plain

Then there is "Blues Song." I sing blues and rock, and soul runs through both — that is home for me, and this song is as honest as anything I have put my name on.

"Blues Song" is nominated for Song of the Year for the SSA Music Award 2026. The winners will be announced tomorrow night, November 7, at 8:00 PM at the festival. I did not write it chasing a trophy. I wrote it the way the blues has always worked: tell the truth without dressing it up, and let people find themselves in it.

Whatever happens at 8:00 PM, the song has already done its work. It has been heard. It has been voted on, shared, and carried by people who believed it deserved a place on that ballot. An award can honor a song for a night. Listeners honor it every time they play it again.

Kaleidoscope, Live and in Color

I keep coming back, too, to "Kaleidoscope (Live)" — because a live recording tells a different kind of truth than a studio take. There is no hiding in it. The breath is there. The room is there. The moment is there, exactly as it happened.

That is the thread running through all of this week's music for me: the studio song, the blues song, and the live song are the same voice telling the truth three different ways. Blues / Rock / Soul is not a label I put on a pitch. It is how I actually sing, and DeLand is a festival built for exactly that — original music, by the people who wrote it, played in the open air for people close enough to feel it.

Two Sets Tomorrow in Downtown DeLand

Here is tomorrow, so you can find me:

2:15 PM — Stage 16, Cafe DaVinci, 112 W Georgia Ave

4:45 PM — Stage 1a, Historic Courthouse, 125 W Indiana Ave

8:00 PM — SSA Music Award winners announced, Main Stage

Two sets, one day, and a whole downtown full of original songs. If you come, come early enough to hear somebody you have never heard before, too. That is how this music survives: listeners willing to discover, not just to recognize.

Fresh Means Alive

So this Fresh Music Friday, my invitation is simple. Play "Distorti0n." Play "Blues Song." Play "Kaleidoscope (Live)." Then, if you can, go hear music live this weekend — mine in DeLand, or any independent artist singing their own songs in a room near you.

A stream counts. A share helps. But a seat filled, a face lifted, a room listening together — that is music at its freshest, no matter when the song was written.

Thank you for listening — really listening. Tomorrow, we do it live.
